Ford Falcon

$37,235
he XR6 sits nicely on the road and seems a little quieter than the Commodore. For the most part the Falcon rides well and is composed in the making a nicer noise than the Holden V6.The ZF auto is a much better transmission, reading the driving patterns far more acutely than the GM tranny. There's more meat on the bones of the steering, with good levels of feel. Even in the wet weather the XR6 had good grip and required little in the way of electronic interference or assistance. The amount of information on offer from the easier-to-read centre display, but controlling it with two lots of dash buttons is overly complex.... Read this review ->

If the Falcon is to continue beyond that date – and there are no guarantees from Ford that it will – Ford Australia faces another decision about whether to extend the inline 4.0-litre six’s lifespan further still by making the necessary investment to make it comply with Euro V emissions regulations coming into force in 2016....

Coming away from our time with the G6, we’re still shaking our heads at how great that engine is. Its power deficit is tiny compared to the identically-priced six cylinder - but the EcoBoost feels slightly more nimble and more satisfying to drive. The G6 won’t win any awards for interior or exterior styling, but Falcons have always been about honesty - what you see is what you get, no clever tricks, just a good solid effortless people’s car. The G6 EcoBoost gives the Falcon a technology and efficiency boost that, when word gets out, may give it some renewed momentum in sales. With this engine, a hugely underrated large car is made better....

Great performance and great fuel economy but very boring looks.

This is such a surprisingly good drive that the fuel saving is only the icing on an appetising cake. Previous LPG-only tests were okay, but other than the savings at the bowser, nothing to write home about. This new one is very different. There's a two-second pause between turning the ignition key and the starter motor engaging. You get used to it. But there's virtually no engine cranking - the engine fires up immediately....

LPG has gone from fleet to fleet-of-foot. Would we buy it? Yes, if it came without the boot spoiler. But not in purple. The only hint the XR6 is running on gas is when you first turn the key, and get a slight hesitation. From then on, it's impressive acceleration. Plant your foot hard and it gathers itself for a nanosecond before it delivers, but feed it steadily and it gives a steady and strong answer....

You can’t knock the LPi for value: take away the $2000 Government grant for factory LPG, and you have a car that will repay its $2500 LPG premium in no time – in 23.5 weeks for a 20,000km annual drivi...

We like the XR6 Turbo, we like it a lot. It’s not the most politically-correct car in a market that is shying away from large, fuel-guzzling cars, but to us it represents the zenith of the Falcon lege...

All in all, the Falcon XR6 Turbo is great value for money. While the engine doesn't bellow like Holden's Commodore SS, there's a certain placidness that will impress your passengers as it trundles down the road sounding like a regular Falcon....

The Ford XR6 is a little bit special, but the quality of some of the finishes sees it fall short of something great.
