The Jeep Cherokee continues as the US 4WD brand’s entry into the medium-SUV segment. Although Jeep is famous for its all-wheel-drive vehicles, the Cherokee range starts with 2WD model added in 2012 and priced from $28,000. That Sport model is joined by a $31,000 Limited model....

Overall, we were very impressed by the latest from the folks at SRT. It would have have been nice to see the larger and more user-friendly satellite navigation system out of the Chrysler 300C SRT8, and some more effort could be put in to the manual mode gear changes. Nonetheless, it’s hard to complain because for $76,000 you’re simply not going to find another SUV that can come anywhere close to this for performance, refinement, practicality, driving dynamics and features....

You can tell the people at Jeep are pumped with self-assurance over their 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 – the most powerful vehicle ever to run off their production line. And it’s not the typically gushing press release that gives their overconfidence away....

This Jeep is built for off-road duties, no doubt about it. It doesn’t seem to matter which situation you throw it into – mud, snow, sand, rocks – it will tackle it head-on. Let the tyres down a little, and it’s even more impressive. But you have to understand that it’s only comfortable when doing that. Leave it on the road and the Wrangler is outclassed by so many others. So, if you’re spending a lot of time on the blacktop, do your arms and back a favour and have a look elsewhere. However, if you’re heading to the beach or the bush every other day, in this price range nothing can touch it....

Heritage and cred abounds when the seven-slot grille of the Jeep Wrangler looms into view. The US brand that is steeped in history from its humble military beginnings is looking to improve its reputation under the new regime and as they said - the only way is up in terms of how its seen by Australians, with a wave of new product coming to Australia, starting with the new petrol V6. ...

Overall, it’s easy to fault the Jeep Wrangler for being an ordinary drive on-road. It’s spartan, rough, generally crude and for the most part, not a great drive around town. It’s only when you get to spend a prolonged period of time behind the wheel and put the Wrangler in its natural habitat that it all begins to make sense. It’s like a grown-up’s toy: it may be completely pointless in a modern world, but you’d still love to own one. In any case, it’s not a car for everyone and if you’re scratching your head wondering why anyone in their right mind would buy one of these things, remember: it’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand....

A solid performance upgrade on the impressive new Grand Cherokee means another winner from Jeep. This is what happens when SUVs go bad. Or good. A muscle car makeover has just transformed the best Jeep in generations into a hotrod rival to a bunch of family heavyweights including the BMW X5M, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and even the Porsche Cayenne turbo....

The Grand Cherokee has raised the bar for Jeep and the Compass fails to clear it. It is acceptable but will never earn the accolades of its big brother - it is a well-priced, middle-of-the-road runner. And in the cut-throat compact SUV segment, it is simply outclassed. I'd accept the vague steering feel as the price I pay for having Jeeps legendary off-road prowess, but that doesn't apply to the two-wheel drive model and that is where Jeep is hoping to make inroads. ...

Like the Jeep Grand Cherokee before it, the new Jeep Compass takes big steps forward in design, quality and refinement. It’s a decent drive around town and on the highway, although not quite on the pace of segment leaders like the Skoda Yeti and the Volkswagen Tiguan. The Compass’s value proposition makes it a compact SUV worth considering, although its modest safety kit is in need of an upgrade....

While the current-gen Grand Cherokee ushered in a new level of comfort, refinement and quality for Jeep’s largest 4WD (and propelled it into the luxury SUV segment in the process), the 2012 Compass has failed to do the same for Jeep’s compact SUV range. It’s attractively priced, and quite nicely styled, but when so many of its competitors offer so much more refinement and general driveability for not a lot more cash, it’s hard to recommend the Compass. Have a look if shopping to a tight budget, but otherwise there are better buys out there....
