As incredible as this may seem, the brand new, 2012 Nissan GT-R leaves the then-new 2011 Nissan GT-R in its dust. Now, to the casual observer, the idea of a new car being better than its immediate predecessor hardly seems incredible—or out of the ordinary at all. But when the car being replaced offers such prodigious levels of performance, it begs the question: How is there any room for improvement?...

The Nissan supercar remains the best value performance machine around - refinements in key areas haven’t detracted from the powerhouse capabilities or its appeal as a serious machine. The ask for something with German or Italian heritage that can keep up with this Japanese mutant is more than double and you’d have to seriously question the worth of the logo....

It’s easy to get overexcited about the Nissan GT-R, afterall, it’s an awesome machine that forces exotic supercar manufacturers to justify their existence. It has its flaws, though. The servicing costs (particularly the cost of transmission oil) is a bit of a worry and the dual-clutch gearbox is not able to drop down numerous gears instantly (like the Porsche 911′s PDK), instead it has to work its way down sequentially. Lets not forget that it will be dethroned in a year’s time by yet another, better GT-R....

There is simply no other car on the market that can do what the GT-R does for a similar cost. It’s unique and quite alone at its price point. It offers bona-fide supercar performance in a half-price seat. It’s also reasonably practical, easy to drive and has space for four - things we don’t typically recognise as supercar attributes. And one thing is certainly clear: the GT-R’s crushing performance will put it at the pointy end of any supercar grid. It’s the ultimate track toy, and, if you can muster the resources for the price of entry, it will never fail to leave a smile on your face....

Where the Evo goes from personable to positively offensive in a matter of seconds, the GT-R delivers its threat with more composure. It's easier to drive and more comfortable, quieter yet comparatively heavier and more readily shows its bulk. But what performance! Even in full auto mode the engine rushes in a seamless line - unbelievably quiet and smooth - to the tacho's redline and effortlessly dispenses with lesser cars. On the Wanneroo Raceway it bites the tarmac and only starts a mild four-wheel drift when pressed too hard or when it hits the rubber left by previous racecars. Always, it is composed and controllable with excellent chassis feedback that's only let down by a vague steering feel. A wonderful piece of machinery....

Nissan's GT-R is simply a fabulous car. If you are a keen driver and can afford the price of entry, and the premium servicing necessary, it demands a very close look....
