While the new Yaris is a good car, the ZR model sits in a no-man’s-land in the light car market. There’s extra equipment, but it's not luxurious. There are sporting touches, but it’s not a hot hatch. Clearly, the tech-laden infotainment system suggests Toyota is shooting for younger first-car buyers, but it can be frustrating to use. We think ZR sales will likely be cannibalised by its own more versatile (but auto only) YRX five-door sibling. Toyota’s reliability and reassuring fixed-price servicing plan are both good reasons to look closely at the Yaris, as is its on-road comfort and perky performance. In a close field, the Polo and Rio are each a nose in front dynamically, but try the Yaris on for size before you buy....

Most of the 25-plus cars in the light-car category are value but the Yaris is one of the top-five stand-outs. Basically, you can't go wrong with this car.

The second generation Yaris - following on from the Echo - improves by evolution to become bigger and stronger. It is making a step away from the "cutesy" end of the segment and looks bolder. In doing so, it will appeal equally to male and female buyers. Toyota says the third-generation Yaris was given a European-inspired styling. That translates to a wider car with more muscular lines that the company hopes will increase its appeal with males - sales of previous models were biased to women. Younger buyers are likely to appreciate the light-coloured interior which is a direct contrast to the austere Skoda....

Coupled with the impressive spec lists of the YRS, YRX and ZR, the new Yaris will be a tough act to beat - especially considering the minimal price movements across the range. We like the sporty ZR the most, in part due to its fun dynamics, but mainly because it packs so much equipment at a reasonable price. Sat nav, climate control and seven airbags for under $19k? Like we said, it’ll be hard to beat....

If not for the drab interior the new 2012 Toyota Yaris is a near flawless contender in the small car category. The exterior looks terrific and guys no longer need shy away behind the steering wheel....

With other light cars on the market that offer more features or better performance for similar money, it’s difficult to recommend the Yaris - especially with an all-new replacement just around the corner....

It's true, good things do come in small packages. Packed with a raft of features as standard, the Toyota Yaris YRX punches well above its weight.
